Pain management in pediatric patients is an essential aspect of nursing care, yet it remains a challenge, especially in low-resource settings like Niger State, Nigeria. Accurate pain assessment in children is crucial for delivering effective pain relief, promoting recovery, and ensuring comfort. However, children often face difficulty in expressing their pain verbally, and their assessment is typically dependent on caregivers and healthcare workers' observations. Pediatric nurses play a pivotal role in assessing and managing children's pain, using a variety of methods, including behavioral, physiological, and self-reporting tools (Aslan et al., 2024).
In Niger State, where healthcare resources and training opportunities are often limited, the effectiveness of pediatric pain assessment methods may vary. It is critical to explore the knowledge and practices of pediatric nurses in assessing and managing pain in children, with a particular focus on the methods they use. This study seeks to appraise the methods employed by pediatric nurses in Niger State to assess and manage pain in pediatric patients and identify potential areas for improvement in practice.
Inadequate pain management in pediatric patients, particularly due to ineffective pain assessment methods, can lead to poor recovery outcomes, prolonged hospitalization, and unnecessary distress for children. Despite the availability of various pediatric pain assessment tools, their application in Niger State may be hindered by insufficient training, lack of resources, or low awareness of the importance of accurate pain assessment. This study will assess the methods used by pediatric nurses in Niger State for pain assessment and examine the challenges they face in providing adequate pain management.
This study will focus on pediatric nurses working in hospitals and healthcare facilities in Niger State. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and observational assessments. Limitations include the potential variability in pain assessment practices across different healthcare settings and the self-reported nature of some data.
